“Mama Knows Best” – 3 ways to tap into your mother’s intuition

What happens when we find out we are going to be a mother? Is that the moment we receive the implanted “mommy chip” and become equipped with mother’s intuition? Are we born with it? I remember being pregnant with my first and asking my sisters “What if…?” too many times to count. After working with thousands of Moms and being a mother of 2 myself, I’m a firm believer in “Mama knows best”. Still, so many women ask me, “How can I feel more confident in my choices as a Mom?” Today I’m sharing three ways to tap into your mother’s intuition.

Get educated on all things mom/baby wellness

It’s a great idea to take prenatal classes, read books, and start making some parenting choices before baby even gets here. This gives you a chance to “practice” being a Mom and envision yourself in that role. That doesn’t mean that your views won’t change later! Motherhood takes a lot of adapting to the different stages and what’s working in the moment. Prenatal education gives you a better idea of the many options you’ll have and get a jumpstart on deciding what may work best with your lifestyle. That way when you go from dress rehearsal to opening night, you’ll feel more like a star than an understudy.

Keep your support circle tight

Having support as a Mom is so vital. It’s important to surround ourselves with people who will create space for us to mother organically and support us in that process. The best friends are those that support you in your choices as a Mom, regardless of their own views on motherhood. It’s important to realize we may all be unique, but can find common ground in motherhood and choose to support each other. It’s also a good idea to have several forms of support. Some ideas include joining a mommy and me yoga class, a local Moms meet-up, or an online support circle.

Trust Yourself

After all is said and done, no one knows better for your baby than you! Don’t believe me? Ask any Mom you know if they’ve had a “Mama knows best” moment. I bet they’ll have a story to share. The more you start making those choices, the more confident you’ll feel that its your mother’s intuition talking! If you have a gut feeling as a Mom, have the confidence to follow it. You’ll never regret listening to those mommy instincts. It’s the very best care you can give your baby.
