Spotlight: West Coast Kids

We’re so grateful for our local retailers, they provide a spot where you can walk into a store and get individualized support to help you choose the best baby carrier for you.  Started back in 1974(!), West Coast Kids provides unique and personalized support for expecting parents at eight locations across Canada. Look for one near you and be sure to pay them a visit. Join their community here.

What was the inspiration to begin your business and open your store?

West Coast Kids has been a family-run business since 1974 when my Mum was pregnant with my older sister, Carrie. Originally the store was called Friendly Bears/ E-Children. My family had been in the furniture business for many years but there were such limited options for children’s and baby furniture. It was all catalogue buying and if you wanted a crib you ordered one from Sears and waited. My parents thought that if they couldn’t find the beautiful and unique nursery products they wanted, then how many other parents were having the same issue? What started as new mother’s vision has blossomed into a successful family business with nine locations across Canada (including our newest arrival coming in the Spring). This industry is so close-knit and having suppliers that have supported us since the beginning truly does bring the family feel to each of our store locations.

What is the number one selling item in your store, besides Ergobaby of course! 😉

Other than our Ergobaby collection, which of course always sells well ;-), the number one selling product would have to be a stroller. Purchasing a stroller is like buying a new car. There are so many options now to fit every lifestyle and family dynamic. A stroller is used every, single day and being able to help a customer decide which one works best for them is so important to us.

What is your favorite thing about first-time, expectant parents?

The passion they have for what they are purchasing for their baby. Before the babies are born there is already so much care and attention taken into every decision made when it comes to their health, safety and well-being. Helping parents turn those dreams into a nursery that they love is what we strive for. We want to provide that unique shopping experience for all of our customers and are dedicated to the safety of their children.

What is your favorite Ergobaby product?

I love the Adapt baby carrier. It is so easy to use and works for every body type. The shape of the base allows the baby to sit in an ergonomically correct position without pulling on the wearers shoulders. Not having to use an insert is a plus with the Adapt as well and I am always a fan of 100% cotton; so much softer for baby!
