This Tuesday, August 25 marks the beginning of Black Breastfeeding Week. We are proud to have been celebrating Black Breastfeeding Week since it’s inception and we continue to get the question: “Why do we need Black Breastfeeding Week?” Here are five reasons. Additionally, we are so honored to be talking with one of the founders, Kimberly Seals Allers to help answer this question and more.
We will also be talking to Kimberly about her latest venture, Irth. As in “birth,” but the dropped the “B” for bias. The US has the highest maternal mortality in the industrialized world, and it is driven by one demographic: Black women. In order to help Black women navigate this tricky landscape, Irth is a “Yelp-like” review & rating app for hospitals & physicians made by and for Black women & birthing people of color. Irth is fighting to end racism in maternity care.
