Embracing Creative Ways to Soothe Your Baby

Parenting often feels like a guessing game. While there are countless articles, books, blogs, and resources out there for us there still isn’t a handbook with all the answers. It can feel overwhelming and confusing. You’re not alone!

When it comes to soothing your baby there are a lot of tricks to try and it will all depend on you and your little one. But first things first, why might your baby be crying? To find the right solution, you’ll want to think about the cause behind the tears. It could be:

  • Hunger
  • Gas
  • Wet or dirty diaper
  • Fatigue
  • Colic
  • Boredom
  • Overwhelmed
  • Hot or cold
  • Sick

If you are feeling frustrated, it’s ok to step away to calm yourself down so you can calming address the situation. If you are calm, it will help your baby be calm.

“An escalated adult can’t deescalate an escalated child.” Big Little Feelings

Here are a few tried and true ways to soothe your baby:

Swaddle Swaddling recreates the feeling your little one had in the womb. Nice and snug. Babies shouldn’t be swaddled all day, just during fussing and sleep.

Calming Sounds – White noise machines to the rescue! Sometimes all baby needs is to be held and “shushed”, but contrary to believe, babies don’t need total silence to sleep or calm down. White noise machines can be so helpful to mimic the sounds they heard in the womb.

Sucking – Experts recommend avoiding overfeeding baby. They might not be hungry, but sucking can soothe them. Try a pacifier or maybe one of their favorite teething toys.

Carry In every culture, and in nearly every resource you’ll find, holding your baby close either skin to skin or in a carrier is universally recognized as one of the best ways to soothe baby. You can never hold your baby too much! There is just no such thing and too much love.

A few things to remember:

Crying is how babies communicate. They aren’t rejecting you. You aren’t failing. They are trying to let you know what they need. Be patient with yourself as you discover this new rhythm with your little one.

If you’re concerned, don’t hesitate to call a healthcare provider.  Some signs that you should call a provider are if you can’t console your baby, if they are experiencing vomiting, diarrhea, or not feeding well, or have a fever. Trust your mama gut.
