How to Create a Perfect First Mother’s Day

When is Mother’s Day?

Mother’s Day is a special day dedicated to honoring motherhood in all it’s forms. From birth mothers to adoptive mothers, step-mothers, spiritual mothers, and so much more, mothers are the heart and soul of families.

In the United States, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. But we know mothers truly deserve even more than one day to be celebrated.

What is Mother’s Day?

Originating in the early 20th century, Mother’s Day was established by Anna Jarvis to honor the sacrifices mothers made for their children. Today, it has become a day of celebration, where families show their appreciation for mothers and mother figures with gifts, cards, and quality time together.

For first time moms, this day can be especially exciting!

Preparing for Mother’s Day

Every mom is different! Let’s start with that fact first. The perfect Mother’s Day will look different to every mom, but what’s most important is that you put thought into making the day special.

Start With a Plan

Schedule the Day: Sketch out a loose timeline for the day to include meals, activities, and plenty of downtime. The goal is to keep the day stress-free and flexible. Tailor the day to the mama you’re celebrating!

Delegate Responsibilities: If other family members or friends are involved, assign them tasks ahead of time. Whether it’s preparing food or entertaining the baby, everyone should know their role to keep the day running smoothly.

Set the Scene: Make sure the house is cleaned up. If the mom you’re celebrating loves fresh flowers, have some fresh cut bouquets around the house. Maybe have her favorite music playing or light some candles with her favorite smells.

A Sentimental Touch: Consider creating a slideshow of the first few months with baby so mama can look back on all the fond memories or create a music playlist of song that have been meaningful to her and her motherhood journey so far.

Anticipate Her Needs: Make sure you have all her favorite snacks and drinks on hand. Include easy-to-eat foods that she can snack on throughout the day, especially if she is breastfeeding. Have all baby essentials stocked and organized and any gifts you’re giving wrapped and ready!

By preparing for Mother’s Day ahead of time, you can ensure that the celebration is not only stress-free but also filled with joyful and peaceful moments that a new mom will cherish.

Mother’s Day Gifts

Choosing the right gift for a new mom on her first Mother’s Day can be exciting and overwhelming, but the most important thing to remember is that she wants to be loved and appreciated.  Here are some ideas to get you started:

Personalized Gifts

Custom Jewelry: A piece of jewelry like a necklace or bracelet engraved with her baby’s name or birthdate. For a more unique touch, consider adding a birthstone.

Photo Keepsakes: A beautifully framed photo of her with her baby, or a custom photo book that captures all the key moments from her pregnancy to motherhood.

Comfort Gifts

Ergobaby Carrier: Ideal for a mom who loves to be on the move with her little one, an Ergobaby carrier offers comfort and support, making it easier to go for walks or run errands while keeping the baby close.

Postpartum Care Kit: Assemble a care package with items like luxurious body lotions, herbal baths, or comfortable nursing bras and nipple cream. These essentials can help her feel more comfortable during the postpartum recovery period.

Quality Sleepwear: Soft, comfortable pajamas or a loungewear set made from breathable materials can make her feel relaxed and cozy during those late-night feedings.

Wellness Gifts

Spa Day at Home: Gift her a basket filled with spa essentials like bath salts, scented candles, a plush bathrobe, and a soothing face mask. Encourage her to take some time for herself to relax and rejuvenate.

Subscription Service: Consider a subscription box tailored for new moms, which can include books, snacks, beauty products, or even curated outfits.

Online Classes or Memberships: Whether it’s yoga, meditation, or fitness classes specifically designed for new mothers, these can offer her a chance to focus on her health and wellbeing.

Experience Gifts

Professional Photo Session: Book a session with a professional photographer to capture this season of motherhood.

Dinner Delivery Service: Make her evenings easier by gifting a subscription to a meal delivery service or arranging for her favorite restaurant to deliver a gourmet meal.

Day Out Voucher: Once she feels comfortable, a voucher for a day out—such as a visit to a botanical garden, museum, or a spa—can be a delightful treat. Make sure the voucher has a long validity period so she can use it when she’s ready.

Remember, the best gifts are those that reflect her personality and contribute to lifestyle!

Mother’s Day Activities

Make the day memorable with activities she’ll love:

Family Walk: Strap the baby into an Ergobaby carrier and take a gentle stroll through your local park, the beach, or another outdoor spot that mama loves!

Watch a Mother’s Day Movie: Choose a film that celebrates motherhood, like “Steel Magnolias”, “Mother’s Day”, “Because I Said So”, “Mothers and Daughters”, “Freaky Friday”, “Mama Mia”, or “Little Women.”

Mother’s Day Meal Ideas

Surprise mom with a homemade meal! Here are some ideas:

Breakfast in Bed: What’s a treat for new moms? Sleeping in! Bring breakfast (and coffee) to mama in bed. Even a simple recipe like pancakes or scrambled eggs can start the day off right.

Family Lunch or Dinner: Make mama’s favorite meal at home if your family isn’t going out and about for the day. If cooking makes you nervous, check into meal services that provide ingredients and instructions, or get a meal catered from her favorite restaurant.

Special Dessert: Bake her favorite cake or buy gourmet chocolates to sweeten the day.

Capturing the Day

Don’t look forget to take lots of photos! Moms are so often the ones taking all the photos, so be her photographer for the day. Capture all the moments even if they seem ordinary. Take candid photos, posed photos and when the day is over print them out so she can look at them for years to come!

The first Mother’s Day is a milestone in any new mom’s life. It’s a chance to show her how much she’s loved and appreciated. With intentional planning, personal touches, and thoughtful messages of love, this day can be as special and memorable as the journey of motherhood itself.
