Top 5 Tips for Summer Sleep

Summer Baby Sleep Tips

For many parents, a good night’s sleep can feel as rare as spotting a unicorn—especially during the summer when longer daylight hours and rising temps can throw off baby’s rest. You might be wondering: What are the signs baby is too hot while sleeping? Or what temperature is too hot for a baby to sleep in the summer? We’ve got you covered. Below are our top tips to help your baby stay cool, comfortable, and sleep more soundly during warmer nights. And no matter the season, always follow safe sleep guidelines: place your baby on their back on a firm, flat sleep surface with no loose bedding or soft items nearby.

1. Blackout Shades

Long summer days are great—except when bedtime rolls around and it’s still light outside. Blackout shades can help signal to your baby that it’s time to wind down, even if the sun is still up. We recommend portable versions with suction cups for quick setup—perfect for use at home or on the go. Bonus: they’re easy to pack for vacations to help create a dark, sleep-friendly space wherever you are.

2. The Right Sleeping Bag: how to dress baby for sleep in summer

Ever woken up in the middle of the night during summer because you’re overheated and can’t get comfortable? Babies feel the same way—except they can’t kick off the covers or adjust the fan. It’s especially important to help your baby maintain a safe, even temperature while sleeping, since overheating can increase the risk of SUID (Sudden Unexpected Infant Death). That’s why loose blankets are not recommended. Instead, a summer sleep sack for baby is a smart, safe solution that helps keep your little one cool and comfortable—day or night.

Our Sleeping Bags and On The Move Sleep Bags are designed for ages 0–3 and feature adjustable shoulder snaps for a custom fit as your baby grows. A two-way zipper makes nighttime diaper changes easier, and a harness slot lets you transfer your baby into a stroller or car seat without disturbing sleep while traveling. The On The Move design even includes tuck-away foot openings—perfect for little ones who want to walk around after they wake up!

3. Signs Baby Is Too Hot While Sleeping

In addition to dressing your baby appropriately, maintaining a comfortable room temperature is key to safe sleep. Experts recommend keeping your baby’s room between 60–68°F when possible. Watch for these signs that your baby may be getting too warm:

  • Sweaty or clammy skin
  • Flushed, warm skin
  • A hot chest when you touch it

If you notice any of these signs, take steps to help your baby cool down—this might mean removing a layer of clothing, adjusting the room temperature, or moving to a cooler space. Keeping your baby comfortably cool can help support safer, more restful sleep.

4. White Noise

Whether it’s your neighbor’s lively backyard BBQ (or yours!), hotel hallway noise, or a sibling squealing with excitement over the new sprinkler—summer brings all kinds of sound disruptions. A white noise machine can help block out those background noises while also creating a consistent, soothing sleep environment. The familiar hum can make it easier for your little one to fall asleep and settle back down if they wake up.

5. Don’t Forget Naps

Last but definitely not least—don’t skip those naps! Warmer weather usually means more time outside, so planning ahead for naps can make a big difference. Try to recreate your baby’s home sleep setup as much as possible when you’re on the go. A comfortable stroller with good padding, a deep recline, and a built-in sun canopy is key. You can also use a product like a SnoozeShade to keep things dark and cool (way safer than draping a blanket or swaddle over the stroller, which can trap heat and make it hard to check on your baby). A portable white noise machine is another great nap-time helper. And if naps just aren’t happening? Don’t worry—we swear by our Ergobaby sleepy dust. Strap on your baby carrier and take a walk—it works like magic.

Bonus Tip for Babies Under 3 Months / Not Yet Rolling Over:

Designed with secure arm pockets to prevent escapes and a leg pouch for quick, no-fuss diaper changes, they’re made to keep your baby snug and settled through the night.
