Mother Love

This week is Black Maternal Health Week and National Minority Health Month.  We are always committed to dismantling racism and increasing equitable healthcare for birthing people from communities of color, but this week is an opportunity to amplify and bring awareness to work that is being done by perinatal health leaders from Black and Indigenous communities of color across the country.  Here are some events happening this week and throughout April:

  • Black Maternal Health Panel – Thursday, April 15, 6:00pm – 8:00pm PST Healthy communities begin with healthy pregnancies. The Linn Benton Health Equity Alliance, in collaboration with the Corvallis/Albany NAACP, Community Doula Alliance, Community Doula Program, Samaritan Health Services, Uplift Lab, InterCommunity Health Network, and Lactation Education Resources is hosting a community panel discussion on Black Maternal health led by traditional health workers, community advocates and healthcare providers. The panel will focus on the community level health impact of reproductive health among Black persons. • Perinatal & Planetary Health & Equity Panel – Friday, April 23, 3-4:30 PST (RSVP on Facebook) Join Nurturely for a FREE panel discussion on the intersection of perinatal health, planetary health, and racial and social justice with expert perspectives from perinatal health equity, environmental epidemiology, perinatal plant medicine, climate justice, and grassroots organizing. Rising temperatures and air pollution increase risk for preterm birth, low birth weight, and stillbirth and Black and Indigenous pregnant parents experience the highest combined risk, highlighting the injustices in both climate exposure and perinatal health. Join us to learn more. FREE Register Here: nurturely.org/planet
  • Coffee Chat with Healthy Birth Initiatives – Tuesday, April 27th 12-1pm PST (RSVP on Facebook) Nurturely is hosting a coffee chat with the amazing team at Healthy Birth Initiatives. Healthy Birth Initiatives addresses the needs of pregnant African American people through Afrocentric perinatal services. If you are a perinatal professional, this event is for you! There is much to be learned from this team as we all work to decrease inequities in the birth and perinatal care systems. FREE Register Here.
  • National Birth Equity Collaborative Schedule of Events including yoga, meditation, activities, and panel discussions on Black-led philanthropy and Black-led healthcare.
  • National Minority Health Month Virtual Event – Speakers will focus on the disproportionate impact that COVID-19 has had on communities of color, why disparities in health outcomes and health care access persist, and what measures can be taken to address these inequities. Free – Register Here.
  • The Irth App is providing resources, talks with Kimberly Seals Allers, and even a giveaway in partnership with BMMA. Click here to find out more.
  • Did you see our series on trailblazers in Black Maternal Health in March? We chat with Kimberly Seals Allers, Kimberly Durdin, and Tracie Collins.

Newborn Carriers in New Colors

We have two options for the newborn phase, the Embrace and the Aura Wrap. When choosing a baby carrier for those first few months of snuggling and cuddling, we offer either a cozy buckle option with the Embrace, or a simple wrap with the Aura Wrap.  The Embrace is now available in a soft, neutral Cream and the Aura Wrap is now available in Sweet Vine and Copper, both earthy and natural hues.

Why a newborn carrier? Imagine life from the perspective of a new baby. So many bright lights, so much activity. You’re not even really sure where you are or how you got here. But you have these all too familiar sounds, familiar smells, and an overwhelming desire to get back close to a place of warmth, comfort, nourishment, and safety.

Our babies are born immature, they need us for their very survival, as they have many years and development ahead of them to reach that place of independence. As soon as they are born we aim to get them right on moms chest as the evidence for Kangaroo Care, also known as skin to skin, is incredible. That’s where a newborn baby carrier comes in.
