At Ergobaby, we understand that choosing the right baby carrier can be an important decision for any parent. Whether you're a new mom or dad or an experienced caregiver, you want to ensure that your little one is safe, comfortable, and secure. With over two decades of experience, Ergobaby is a trusted name in the world of baby carriers, strollers, and related accessories. In this blog, we'll answer some of the most commonly asked questions about Ergobaby to help you make informed decisions for your family.

1. Is Ergobaby safe for newborns?

Absolutely! Ergobaby carriers are designed with safety and ergonomics as a top priority. In fact, Ergobaby carriers are certified by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) and meet the highest safety standards. The Embrace Newborn Carrier, Aura Wrap, Omni Breeze, Omni Dream, and Aerloom are all safe for newborns (starting at 7lbs) without an infant insert.  Some of our older designs require an infant insert to safely use the carrier because for newborns, it is essential to provide extra support for their delicate heads, necks, and spines. This is where the Ergobaby Infant Insert comes in. The insert offers ergonomic support for babies weighing 7-12 pounds until they grow strong enough to sit in the carrier without extra support.  To use the infant insert, simply secure it inside the carrier and place your baby into the insert, ensuring they are comfortably positioned with their face visible and their hips in the "M" shape for healthy hip development. 2. What is the age limit for Ergobaby carriers?

Each Ergobaby model is designed to accommodate babies of various ages and weights.
  • Embrace Newborn Carrier (7-25lbs, 0-12 months)
  • Aura Wrap (8-25lbs, 0-12 months)
  • Omni Breeze (7-45lbs,0-48months)
  • Omni Dream (7-45lbs,0-48months)
  • Aerloom (7-35lbs, 0-36 months)
  • Alta (12-45lbs, 4-48 months)
  • Lift (17-45lbs, 6-48 months)
  • Away (12-35lbs, 4-36 months)
Most carriers can support newborns (with or without the infant insert) and can carry children up to 45 pounds, which is typically around the age of 4. It’s recommended that babies stay in the carrier for about two hours at a time to ensure they remain comfortable, but with proper adjustments and breaks, carriers can be used for longer periods.  Check out the best-selling Ergobaby carriers, which are perfect for both newborns and toddlers.   Learn more about our different baby carriers.

3. When can I use Ergobaby without the infant insert?

Ergobaby’s newest Omni carriers don’t require an infant insert. If you are using a Omni 360 or Original, once your baby weighs around 12 pounds or shows signs of neck and head control, you can stop using the infant insert. Typically, this occurs around 4-6 months of age. At this stage, you can place your baby directly into the carrier without the need for additional padding. Need a guide on how to put on the Ergobaby carrier? It’s simple. Start by adjusting the waist and shoulder straps to fit your body, then securely fasten the carrier around your waist and shoulders before placing your baby inside.

4. What country is Ergobaby from?

Ergobaby was founded in 2002 in Hawaii by a mother who sought a more comfortable and ergonomic way to carry her baby. Today, Ergobaby's design roots are in California, where the team continues to innovate and improve babywearing products. With a global reach, Ergobaby products are now loved and trusted by families worldwide.

5. Are Tula and Ergobaby the same company?

Ergobaby acquired Baby Tula are often compared as they both specialize in baby carriers. We are sister brands who both share the same goal: to support parents with comfortable, ergonomic options for babywearing.  Ergobaby offers a range of soft-structured carriers with specific ergonomic features as well as a bouncer, stroller, high chair and more! Tula, while still creating comfortable and ergonomic carriers, focuses on designs that are #distinctlyyou with more fabric and print options and adjustable carriers that cater to different babywearing preferences.   Both brands provide excellent comfort and support, but the choice ultimately depends on your personal preferences.

6. Which is better: Tula or Ergobaby?

When comparing Tula and Ergobaby, it largely comes down to personal preference.  Ergobaby carriers offer padded waistbands and shoulder straps for extra support, making them perfect for extended wear. They also feature a wide range of ergonomic positions, including front, back, and hip carrying.   Tula carriers also offer padded waistbands and shoulder straps, but focus more on fashionable designs, limited-edition handmade styles, and a variety of fabrics, which may appeal to parents who want a baby carrier that matches their style.

7. Can you wear an Ergobaby on a plane?

Wearing a baby in a carrier is not allowed on airplanes. However, bringing a carrier along for hands-free baby-wearing for other parts of the trip is a great option.   You can wear an Ergobaby carrier at the airport, which is particularly helpful for keeping your hands free while navigating through check-ins, security, and boarding gates. However, it’s important to note that wearing a baby in a carrier during takeoff and landing on airplanes is not permitted by most airlines due to safety regulations.   Still, bringing your Ergobaby along for travel can be a lifesaver when walking through airports or standing in lines.

8. How to Care for Your Ergobaby Carrier

Caring for your Ergobaby carrier is easy. Most models are machine washable, making clean-up a breeze after spills or regular wear. Use mild detergent, wash on a gentle cycle, and avoid bleach or fabric softeners. If you prefer to hand wash, soak the carrier in cold water with a mild detergent, then air dry. For specific instructions, refer to our guide on how to clean your Ergobaby carrier.

9. Which Ergobaby carrier is best?

Choosing the best Ergobaby carrier depends on your specific needs. The Omni Carriers are our best-selling baby carriers because they front and back carry positions and they are suitable for newborns without the need for an insert. They are a great one-stop-shop carrier.  For those looking for a softer, newborn-focused option, the Ergobaby Embrace is ideal.  If you’re looking for a good lightweight and compact travel carrier, Away is the way to go. However, it’s important to note that the Away carrier is best for quick carries, not long hikes or adventures. If you need a travel carrier and you're planning on wearing your baby a lot, go with an Omni.   Finally, if you are hoping to continue wearing your little into their toddler years, Tula has a great toddler carrier option!  Take this quiz to find out which carrier is right for you!    Ergobaby carriers are designed with both parent and baby in mind, offering comfort, support, and safety at every stage.
