How to Put on an Ergobaby Carrier

The most important tip we can give you when it comes to putting on any of our baby carriers and clipping the shoulder straps is to make sure that the straps are super loose.

Method 1

To loosen the webbing on each side of your carrier, all you have to do is lift the small buckle on each strap. This is such a simple thing, but it makes a world of difference and makes it much easier to put a baby carrier on by yourself. When the shoulder straps are loose, it makes the carrier ride up, so the chest clip is resting on the back of your neck. If you can reach around to the back of your neck, then you can easily clip the chest clip behind you, and then tighten the clip and shoulder straps as needed.

To get the carrier off, work backward. Loosen each shoulder strap, which again causes the carrier to ride up, and then unclip the chest clip at the back of your neck.

Method 2

With this method, what we here at Ergobaby like to call the t-shirt method, you again want the shoulder straps to be really loose. After pulling the straps over your shoulders, instead of clipping in the back, bring the chest clip forward over your head and clip it in front of you. Next, you just take it and put it over your head like you would when putting on a t-shirt. Then, you can put your baby in through the top of the carrier – making sure he or she is safely and snugly sitting – and tighten the shoulder straps.

To get your baby out, loosen the straps, bring the carrier slightly forward, and then bring the chest clip back over your head like when taking off a t-shirt.

Some Ergo babywearers prefer the t-shirt method. They find it a little easier to do. But we recommend testing both to figure out which one works best for you!

If you’re still having some trouble, try adjusting the back webbing on your shoulder straps. Did you know they move? So depending on how tall or short you are or how long your arms are, you can adjust each side up or down until the carrier is easier to put on, easier to clip by yourself, and more comfortable to wear.
